body Chromosomes were named before their function was known. The name was the result of the ability of chromosomes to absorb dyes to make them easy to see under the microscope, so they were just called chromosomes (colored bodies)
son sound Sonar uses sound to detect surroundings.
spec/spic look at A spectator is watching something happen.
sperm seed Gymnosperms have their seeds in a cone, like a pine cone, instead of in a fruit. (gymno = bare, sperm = seed, so they are bare seeds)
spher ball, round The biosphere is the entire part of Earth (a big ball) where living things can be found.
spir, spire breath Respiration is the process of breaking glucose into usable cellular energy, consuming oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide.
