Grade 7 Unit 06: Flow of Energy (15 days)

TEKS

(5)  Matter and energy. The student knows that interactions occur between matter and energy. The student is expected to:

(A)  recognize that radiant energy from the Sun is transformed into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis;

(B)  diagram the flow of energy through living systems, including food chains, food webs, and energy pyramids.

(7)  Force, motion, and energy. The student knows that there is a relationship among force, motion, and energy. The student is expected to:

(B)  illustrate the transformation of energy within an organism such as the transfer from chemical energy to thermal energy; and

(12)  Organisms and environments. The student knows that living systems at all levels of organization demonstrate the complementary nature of structure and function. The student is expected to:

(C)  recognize levels of organization in plants and animals, including cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organisms;

Trans Pecos Food Web

In this unit you will create a food chain for the Trans Pecos area. You will confirm each organism exists in the area using iNaturalist and you will use other trustworthy sources to confirm the relationships exist. The relationships should be normal, not the exceptions. For example, a bear may not pass the opportunity to kill and eat an injured mountain lion, but it would not regularly stalk, chase, and kill mountain lions. You will also not use domesticated animals such as dogs, cats, and livestock. Each trophic level will need a high resolution-picture (sourced), and a source for the relationship, with relevant text. See a sample here.

Resources

  1. iNaturalisit will help you identify local species.
  2. Animal Diversity Web has a lot of additional information about specific animals, inluding what eats them, and what they eat.

Review

Before taking the test on this unit, you should do the review.
