Biology Unit 08: Taxonomy Review

  1. 1. Jellyfish and starfish are not fish. A seahorse is a fish, not a horse. Horny toads are lizards. Common names are easy to remember, but what are some problems with them? Why is it important to have standardized scientific names? Why are the names Latin?
  2. 2. What is taxonomy?
  3. 3. Since standardized naming started, there have been constant changes to the standardized names of organisms. Why?

Use the table above to answer questions 4 and 5.

  5. 4. At which taxonomic level do the animals diverge?
  6. 5. What is the scientific name of an American Elk?
  7. 6. What is the difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes? What domains are prokaryotes?  What kingdoms belong to eukarya (the eukaryotes).
  8. 7. What difference is there between the cell wall of a plant and a fungus?
  9. 8. What are three organelles that a plant cell has that an animal cell does not have?  What is one organelle that  an animal cell has that a plant cell lacks?
  10. 9. Fill in the table. For cell wall, indicate whether it has a cell wall.  If it does have a cell wall, what is it composed of?  Some kingdoms have example of both unicellular and multicellular, and heterotrophic and autotrophic organisms.  Indicate these examples in the chart.

  11. 10. Know the taxonomic heirarchy, from most general, domain, to most specific, species.
